Becoming Our Best
PUTTING ON YOUR PANTS ONE LEG AT A TIME
Recently my 89-year-old tennis partner Bob fell and broke his hip. I’ve seen him fall on hard tennis courts and then get up to play again. This time he was in his home, balancing on one foot and putting the other foot in a pair of pants. The foot caught for a moment and Bob fell, breaking his hip.
It seemed there might be some things here for older people to consider. Things like:
• Lean against something or sit down when putting on your pants.
• Be aware that our sense of balance can be lost quickly or gradually. It will deteriorate over time.
• Work alone or with an expert on balance exercises. They can help.
• Try not to over-react if your balance isn’t as good as it used to be. Continuing activity at a sensible level is good.
Like it or not, we are all are growing older. A wise person said, “Successful aging involves gracefully accepting minor losses in our capabilities as they occur.” Sounds right to me! Combine that thought with “Use it or lose it” to continue healthy activities for as long as you can and you have a formula for a healthy, happy life.
Keep smiling – it takes fewer muscles than frowning and helps us connect with the people we see in a better way.
